How to say about a person’s age

In order to say about a person’s age we use the construction «Кому сколько лет» (How old are/is...). When we want to say about our own age (present), we say:

Мне двадцать лет – I am twenty years old.
(Who?) Мне (How old?) Двадцать лет.
Кому? Мне. Тебе. Вам. Ему. Ей. Им. Маме. Ученикам. Детям. – *Who? I. You. He. She. They. Mother. Students. Children (*When we talk about age in Russian, we use personal pronouns in Dative case. In English it is in Nominative).

When we talk about age that a person he/she has not attained yet (future):

Мне будет двадцать три года, когда я закончу университет – I will be twenty three years old, when I’ll graduate from university.

Or about the past:

Моему брату было пятнадцать лет, когда он написал свой первый рассказ. – My brother was fifteen years old, when he wrote his first novel.

It would be useful to repeat the matching rule of numerals and nouns:

1 – один год [adin got] – 1 year old
2-4 – два, три, четыре года [dva, tri, chitiri goda] – 2-4 years old
5-20 – пять — двадцать лет [pyat’ – dvatsat’ let] – 5-20 years old

Remember, the noun «год» (year) always agrees with the last number of a numeral.
21 – двадцать один год [dvatsat’ adin got] – 21 years old
22-24 – года [goda] – 22-24 years
25-30 – лет [let] – 25-30 years

Exercise. Put the word in brackets into appropriate form.

1. Сколько (ты) лет? (How old are you?)
2. Когда (я) будет сорок (год), я уеду жить в деревню. (When I will be forty years old, I’ll go to live in a village)
3. (Моя сестра) было три (год), когда я пошел в школу. (My sister was three years old, when I went to school).
4. Я и моя жена вместе уже 21 (год). (We live together with my wife 21 years).
5. Моим студентам 18 (год). (My students are 18 years old).
6. В следующем году (дедушка) будет 70 (год). (Next year grandpa will be 70).
7. Мне 31 (год), но друзья говорят, что я выгляжу на 20 (год). (I am 30 but my friends say, I look like 20).

There are some words which can help us to describe a person of certain age. A child, a girl or a young man, an adult, a senior, an old man.

Мой брат - еще ребенок. – My brother is still a child.

Ребенок [ribyonak] – a child (pl. «дети» - children) – a person from birth to approximately 12 years, when he/she becomes the youth. We use this word for both boy and girl.

В класс вошли девушка и молодой человек. – A girl and a young man entered a classroom.
Когда ты взрослый, ты сам решаешь, чем заниматься. – When you are an adult, you decide on your own what to do.
Любой пожилой человек нуждается в заботе. – Any senior needs care.
Старикам - уважение и почет – Respect and honor to old people.

Polite address to people of different ages:

To children: мальчик [mal’chik] – a boy, девочка [devachka] – a girl.
To the youth: молодой человек [maladoy chilavek] – a young man, девушка [devushka] – a young woman.
To adults and seniors: мужчина [mushchina] – a man, женщина [zhen’shchina] – a woman.
