Dative case

Dative case in Russian has a range of functions. There are prepositions which prompt to you that you should use the dative case. But there are also a lot of verbs which are used with them and which you should just memorize.

1. Well, the prepositions of dative case are К and ПО.

pay attention, we use the preposition К in regard to an object or direction, but not the place.

Мы идём к родителям. Мы идём к вам. - We are going to our parents. We are going to visit you.

but

Мы идём в кино - We are going to the cinema.
Говорить по телефону - to speak on the telephone.
Гулять по берегу моря - to walk on the sea shore.
Экзамен по русскому языку - the exam in Russian.

2. The functions of the dative case are condition - as emotional as physical.

Мне холодно, тепло, жарко, хорошо, плохо - I'm cold, warm, hot, good, bad.
Ему весело, скучно, забавно, интересно - He is having fun, he is bored, he is interested.

3. Verbs used with the dative case. This rule is applied to perfective aspect, as well as imperfective aspect of most verbs.

Here are the rules of changing in nouns' and adjectives' endings in the singular form, dative case:

Feminine gender: А-Е, Я-Е, Ь-И, ИЯ-ИИ. АЯ-ЕЙ, ЯЯ-ЕЙ.

Masculine gender: consonant -У, Ь-Ю, Й-Ю. ЫЙ-ОМУ, ИЙ-ЕМУ.

Neuter gender: Е-Ю, О-У, ИЕ-ИЮ. ОЕ-ОМУ, ЕЕ-ЕМУ.
