В мире существует более 220 разновидностей дятлов. Язык дятла такой длинный, что может полностью обмотать шею дятла. Королевский дятел считается самой крупной разновидностью дятлов. Его длина может достигать полметра. А карликовый дятел является самой маленькой птичкой этого вида. Его длина не превышает 8 см. У дятлов такой мощный клюв, что они могут сделать отверстия не только в дереве, но и плотном металле. Так, в 1995 году дятлы продырявили топливный бак космического шаттла "Дискавери", в связи с чем его запуск был перенесен.
