Термин "Карликовая планета" появился в 2006 году. Карликовые планеты занимают промежуточное положение между планетами и астероидами. Это небесные тела, которые обращаются по орбите вокруг Солнца, имеют близкую к сферической форму и имеют достаточную массу для гидростатического равновесия. При этом, они не являются спутниками планет. В нашей Солнечной системе известно 5 карликовых планет: Церера, Плутон, Эрида, Макемаке и Хаумеа.

These are celestial bodies which orbit around the Sun and have the form close to spherical and has sufficient weight for their hydrostatic balance. At the same time, they aren't satellites of planets. There are 5 known dwarf planets in our Solar System: Ceres, Pluto, Eris, Makemake, Haumea.
