22 февраля 1968 года в Западной Антарктиде на острове Кинг-Джордж начала функционировать советская полярная станция «Беллинсгаузен». Полярная станция была названа в честь Фаддея Беллинсгаузена - русского мореплавателя и первооткрывателя Антарктиды. На станции выполняются географические, геологические и биологические исследования.
